If the Recession of 2008 taught me that making long-term plans (5-10 years out) wasn’t my thing, the past few years – from the Great Resignation to Career Hugging and whatever the heck is going on now – have reinforced it.
Why? Because life has a way of throwing curveballs, causing us to shift the goalposts and modify our dealbreakers.
I began focusing on a 1-year plan and creating a sort of project roadmap to guide me. A few years later, my business coach introduced a 12-month planning exercise she called “The Champagne Brunch,” which proved the perfect partner to this roadmap.
Here’s how it works:
#1 Picture yourself 12 months out and feeling successful.
#2 Identify 3 things in that picture that prove to you that you’ve indeed achieved success.
#3 NEXT . . . VISUALIZE 👀
🌟 What will you be eating in that picture (and what does the food taste like)?
🌟 What will you be drinking?
🌟 Where are you sitting and what are your surroundings?
🌟 What do things around you smell like?
#4 NOW IDENTIFY 🔎
💡 Identify 3 big steps that you can take to help you achieve each of the items from that picture.
💡 Identify 2 smaller steps you can begin taking TOMORROW to help you achieve each of those big steps.
BOOM . . . you’ve got your New Year’s project plan! 💥
I hope you’ll give it a try during these early days of 2026. Although a bit woo-woo, it works. Cheers to a healthy and prosperous New Year!
