Are you struggling to articulate your job-by-job accomplishments when writing your resume? Below are 7 questions I use to enable introspection in my role as a professional resume writer. I find they help provide a clear picture of successes and growth, and hope you’ll find them helpful.
#1 What brought you to the role?
Were you recruited for a new role or to replace someone? Was this an opportunity to explore a new aspect of the job function, a new industry, or to learn something new? Was this a promotion?
#2 What was the challenge laid out before you in this new role?
Were you challenged with fixing something (team, process, etc) that was broken, building something from the ground up or to drive next-level growth?
#3 What is your before v. after story?
What did the situation look like when you started, what do things look like now and what role did you play from moving things from Point A to Point B?
Lastly, why were your responses to this question relevant to the the team/company/customer and how can you prove it for the reader?
#4 What were things like when you first arrived and peeked behind the curtain?
Were things a hot mess? Chaotic? Operating well but required slight tweaks?
#5 How are things better now (thanks to you) compared to when you first arrived?
Dig for stats/figures to prove comparison.
#6 How did you leave your mark?
As you reflect back, or if you were to leave tomorrow, what about this role and your work in it makes you proud?
#7 What’s your reputation?
What words would your peers, manager, direct reports, and/or customers use to describe you?
